Office of the President and Vice President

Navajo Hopi Land Commission Office

The Navajo Hopi Land Commission Office (NHLCO) is an executive‑branch program operating under the Office of the President and Vice President (OPVP) of the Navajo Nation. As part of the President’s administrative portfolio, NHLCO is charged with implementing and advancing the Nation’s policies related to the Navajo–Hopi Land Settlement Act, federal relocation programs, and the long‑term needs of communities affected by land partition.

Under OPVP oversight, NHLCO is responsible for:

Executing executive directives related to land, relocation, and federal obligations

Coordinating intergovernmental relations with federal agencies, including those            involved in the transition and closure of the Office of Navajo and Hopi Indian                Relocation (ONHIR)

Ensuring program accountability and compliance with Navajo Nation laws,                   resolutions, and executive priorities

Supporting chapters and impacted communities through policy guidance,                   technical assistance, and strategic advocacy

Advancing the President’s initiatives to protect Diné sovereignty, cultural                     integrity, and community wellbeing across the FBFA, NPL, HPL, and New                   Lands.

NHLCO's placement within OPVP enhances its authority to represent the Navajo Nation in high-level negotiations, enforce federal responsibilities, and coordinate cross-divisional efforts that address housing, grazing, infrastructure, and community development needs. This structure ensures that the interests of impacted families stay a priority at the highest level of Navajo Nation governance.
